Counted by filing date. The offices publish new applications with a delay of a few days, so the most recent days keep filling in.
Where the data comes from
Every night our ingest pipeline collects new and updated trademark applications from the official registers of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Status changes, registrations and expiries are picked up as they happen.
The records are normalized and added to the same search index that powers trademark clearance at Patentir. Once a night, Explore aggregates that index into the statistics you see here, covering every year from 1996 to 2025.

How we count
- Filings are trademark applications, counted by the year they were filed.
- Country is the country of the first applicant, so a US filing by a Chinese company counts for China.
- Industries are the 45 Nice classes. One application can cover several classes.
- Trend words match whole words in the trademark name. "AI" matches "AI Studio" but not "Maison".
- Ask the data uses an AI model that looks up the answer in these statistics. Questions are logged anonymously, without IP addresses, to improve the service.
